Poverty In India Drops to 21.9% in 2011-12. The new 'Poverty Estimates' released by Planning commission shows that poverty in India dropped from 37.2% (in 2004-05) to 21.9% in 2011-12. The survey was conducted by National sample Survey Organisation (NSSO). Planning commission updated the poverty estimates for the year 2011-12 as suggested by Tendulkar Committee. According to the new estimates, those who have income less than Rs.816 in villages and Rs. 1,000 per month in cities will be considered as poor.
