News Notes July 28, 2013

-India offers 100 million dollars credit to Vietnam to purchase military equipment.

- Master Partnership Pact signed for Giant 30-m Optical Telescope
the Master Partnership Agreement (MPA) for the construction of the $1.5-billion Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), what would be the world’s largest optical and infrared telescope, was signed by the five partner countries — Canada, China, India, Japan and the U.S. — in Hawaii, the site for the proposed telescope. The Department of Science and Technology (DST), is the main government agency coordinating the Indian participation.  The construction is expected to begin next year and the telescope is expected to become operational in 2022. India is a 10 per cent partner in the project, which implies a financial commitment of about Rs. 1,000 crore. Also, India is designing a mirror coating system and exploring the possibilities of setting up a unit to polish 100 segments to the project

-Last day tea board eased the export licensing norm. Following this it would now be possible to obtain a license within 48 hours

-India is staking the water projects of Bangladesh. The projects include Teesta-1, Teesta II and Tipimukh hydel project.

-India approves power projects of USD $160 million to boost power projects in Nepal. It includes Koshi Corridor Transmission Lines (220 KVA), Solu Corridor Transmission Lines (32 KVA), Rahughat hydro power project (32MW)

-Govt setup autonomous agency to coordinate skill development efforts. They plans to skill 500 million Indian citizens by 2022. The name of the agency is NSDA (National Skill Development Authority)

-Wild Life Institute of India to track the movement of The great Indian Bustard Bird one of the critically endangered species using satellites

-According to PMRP (Prime Ministers Reconstruction Program) , Baninhal-Quzigund Rail link was made. It is a 118 KM long rail link. It has 11 KM long tunnel which is water proof, and it has the largest air quality monitoring system

-UIDAI wins 21st century achievement award 2013.

-Kiran Bedi was honored with Nomura Award in Singapore for her humanitarian works. She donated the entire reward money for the education of the children of prisoners.

-India won 3 awards at SAARC film festival.

- 29th annual meeting of World Economic Forum is to be held in Kochi, Kerala. 22 of the WEF were held in New Delhi. One was held at Maharashtra. This is the second time to be held in Kerala.

-Highest Krishi Vignjan Kendra to be set up at Nyoma, Leh.  

-IGNOU has decided to shut ISLRTC ( Indian Sign Language Research and Training Center)

-Center, Odisha locks horns over mining in Niyamgiri

-India Australia raise the pitch on maritime cooperation It has agreed to hold joint naval exercises in 2015

-According to the new Crime Record Statistics by National Crime Record Beuro Kerala tops with 455.8 cases of crime of 100000 persons. Kerala is followed by Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh


-Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 : The Act mandates a Complaints Committee in every workplace. It also mandates district officials to set up a Local Complaints Committee in every district. unwelcome act or behavior, either direct or implied, which includes physical advances, demands or requests for sexual favors, sexually coloured remarks, sharing pornography, other unwelcome physical, verbal or non-verbal conduct of a sexual nature. It also includes promises of promotions, threats of dismissal, and creating an intimidating work atmosphere. If a complaint is false or malicious, action can be taken against the woman. A failure on behalf of the employer to constitute a Committee or take action is a penal offence.
